Event: City Modern. A celebration of New York Design October 1-7, 2012

Event: City Modern. A celebration of New York Design October 1-7, 2012

New York Magazine and Dwell Magazine have put together a great series of events, including home tours focusing on modern design in New York City (Manhattan and Brooklyn) from October 1 to 7 (2012) . I’ve personally purchased tickets to the “Emerging Designer” Open Studio Tours and Panel Discussion as well as the “Meet the Architect” mixer.

If you are in the New York area, or will be during that time, I hope you’ll check it out!

Here’s the rundown (from the event website):

Just before releasing this post, I also received an email from Architecture For Humanity, an excellent non-profit. They are providing volunteers as docents for the home tours.  A great chance to volunteer, get some discounts and swag.  See here:

Call for Volunteers!

New York is a treasure trove of inspiring and innovative architecture. Each day we walk by hundreds of apartment buildings, single dwellings, and cultural institutions without knowing what gems may lie within. Dwell + New York magazine have curated an inspiring tour of ten residential properties in New York City and Brooklyn to showcase the best examples of innovative modern architecture and design from New York’s leading architects and designers. The Manhattan tour takes advantage of new building practices that create unexpected open spaces, while the Brooklyn tour represents unexpected modern interiors nestled inside historical facades. Learn more here.

We are looking for Home Tour Volunteers to act as docents at the homes on the two day Tour available to greet guests and answer questions (having been briefed by the architects). Volunteers are needed Saturday October 6th in a Manhattan residence from 9am-4pm and/or Sunday October 7th in a Brooklyn residence from 9am-4pm.

As a thank you, all Volunteer Docents will receive a free one-year subscription to Dwell Magazine, a free one-year subscription to NY Magazine, an invitation to attend any of the Panels being held 2nd-5th October (check the schedule on the website), an invitation to cocktail reception on Sat Oct 6th, a $10 Metro Card, a Dwell t-shirt, and of course, we’ll provide you with lunch while you volunteer.

All volunteers will need to attend a Welcome Evening in NYC on Thursday September 27th where they will be given further information on their designated house and meet their onsite Dwell manager.
