Classic Woodwork Inc is a high-end residential woodwork contractor based in Montreal. Recently, Simon Lacroix reached out to me via LinkedIn and introduced himself and his company to let me know about their work in NYC. I thought an introduction to his company was worthy of a post here on RenovatingNYC.
How did Classic Woodwork get started?
Classic Woodwork started out over 20 years ago, in 1992, as a millwork product distributor in a tiny 1,500 sf warehouse in Montreal. The company was distributing architectural wood doors, moldings, stair treads & handrails to both residential and commercial customers.
Was there a major moment or event that influenced the start of your business
After 5 years of distributing those products, Guy Gingras, founder, was convinced that there was more potential in focusing his efforts on the residential market. He felt that he could differentiate his woodwork firm from the competition through an emphasis on service. In order to offer better service and to have more control on the quality of its products, he made the decision to switch from distribution and light manufacturing to full blown architectural woodwork production. He invested the profits made in the previous years and bought a 30,000 sf shop, purchased state of the art equipment, and hired the best shop personnel and project management personnel he could find. For the next 10 years, most of the sales were concentrated in the Montreal market, catering to the main and secondary residences of the rich and famous.
What brought you to New York City?
In 2005, a reputable designer from Montreal hired Classic for its New York residence. The project was an undisputed success and Classic’s name began to spread in the luxury residential sphere. Guy then hired Patrick Beaudry, a seasoned woodwork professional as his right hand man and successfully pursued New York market development.
I notice that you have a motto featured on your website: “we have built the impossible because we believed it was possible.” Can you give an example of this working in practice?
A French Architect working in NYC and Paris, which Classic had collaborated with in the previous years for the Ski retreat of a notorious businessman in Tremblant, had a project for a luxury residence in the Seychelles Islands off the coast of east Africa. The architect wanted Canadian barnwood everywhere, inside and out. He wanted the barnwood to be silver-colored, not brown. Classic researched the product and found out that the color of wood the architect was looking for was only available in a specific valley in Canada. Classic submitted the right samples and got the job. The run-down barns were demolished and transformed into luxury architectural woodwork and installed in a magnificent residence on an island in the Indian Ocean.
