Ninth Avenue Duplex by WUNDERground Architecture + Design
An Eco-Friendly Duplex Combination / Renovation in Chelsea
The millwork details and furniture selection in the duplex combination and renovation are nearly perfection. If I had a chance to see it for myself, I would know for sure. The color palette and mid-century furniture design coupled with the custom millwork make this home an absolute stunner. It must be the envy of anyone that comes to visit. I could go on and on about each of the individual pieces, but the whole is just a touch greater than the sum of its parts. This is easily a place I could call a home in the city for my family. If the place has any kind of private outdoor space, it would be absolutely perfect.

Architect’s Project Description: “With the arrival of a new member, this family of five had outgrown their 2-bedroom loft in a prominent Chelsea building and chose to expand by purchasing the identical apartment above.
To rework the 3600sf space, the existing units were completely gut-renovated. The lower floor was transformed into a family realm including a large eat-in kitchen, a substantial playroom and an adult living/dining area. A new wood and steel staircase opens into the upper living quarters, featuring a study, laundry room, three children’s bedrooms and a south-facing master suite.
As an owner priority, we incorporated extensive health-conscious systems and materials and dedicated a substantial effort to improving the thermal and acoustical performance of the exterior walls. The owner’s love of contemporary American craft details is evident throughout the space in several custom millwork pieces. This project maintains their appreciation for loft living while supporting a functional life with 3 young children.”
ABOUT WUNDERground Architecture + Design
WUNDERground is a Brooklyn-based, design architecture and interiors studio specializing in private home and distinctive commercial, restaurant and retail projects in the New York City area. By choice, the studio remains small at its core to ensure a high level of personal project attention and focus.
Our team understands the unique complexities of different construction projects in New York, including working with the Department of Buildings, Landmarks Preservation Commission, project consultants, product suppliers, building managers and Co-Op/Condo Boards.
While custom tailoring solutions to suit owner/user project goals and functional needs, we add depth and wonder at an experiential level. Our design /drawing / construction administration process is collaborative, thoughtful, organized and detail-oriented, without losing sight of the big picture goals. Our aim is always the creation of a thorough, poetic and cohesive living or working space that surpasses our clients’ expectations.
WUNDERground was founded in the fall of 2002 by principal architect Nancy Nienberg, who directs the work, engaging and supporting frequent collaborators on a project basis.
Nancy Nienberg completed the University of Cincinnati’s undergraduate co-op program in Architecture while working around the country and abroad in a variety of office. While at Cincinnati, she was the recipient of both the school’s AIA Henry Adams Medal and the graduating Professional Achievement Award. Following the completion of a Post-Professional Master of Architecture from Yale University, she was recruited to New York to help establish a new office for a highly creative and team-based international commercial interiors firm.
In 2002, to pursue her interests in working at a more detailed scale, she established her own practice, WUNDERground. She is a Registered Architect in the state of New York and a LEED Accredited Professional. Nancy brings the personal care and attention of her Midwest roots, training from some of our country’s top offices and educational institutions, an acute design acumen and team mentality to every project she’s involved in.
