Recently searching for an elegant adjustable shelving solution for my home office, I discovered the AS4 Modular Furniture System by Atlas Industries. Digging into the company further, I realized that I had worked with Joseph Fratesi sometime in the late nineties on a few custom metal fabrication projects. It was no surprise to see how beautifully their portfolio of projects had developed. As a multi-disciplinary design and manufacturing company creating modular shelving and storage solutions as well as furniture, residential renovations and retail showrooms, Atlas has proved to be adept at the craft at all scales. The following are examples of my favorites, but it’s worth taking a closer look through their website for more design deliciousness.
About Atlas Industries
Founded in 1993 by Thomas Wright and Joseph Fratesi, Atlas Industries is a multi-disciplinary design and manufacturing firm integrating interiors, furniture and objects in a craft-based sensibility.
Our work is informed by the conviction that designing and building are mutually implied processes, always in dialogue. As the abstraction of design finds material expression in an object or space, the success of that expression must be sought in one’s experience of it.
This approach is evident across the spectrum of our work, but nowhere more so than in our signature as4 modular furniture system™, whose versatility and understated beauty have made it a favorite of designers and architects across the globe.
Thomas Wright grew up on a farm in California’s Central Valley. After graduating from UC Berkeley with a degree in architecture, he worked in architecture and engineering firms in New York and San Francisco, before settling in New York.
Joseph Fratesi was raised in northern Illinois. After studying economics and history at the University of Illinois, he moved to New York where he and Wright met, and began to explore the ideas and create the body of work that evolved into Atlas Industries.
In 2013, after being based in Brooklyn for twenty-two years, we moved to Newburgh, in New York’s Hudson Valley. Here, in our studio and shop, we design, prototype, invent, build, and produce our work.
